UPPER ARLINGTON LABOR DAY ARTS FESTIVAL
Emerging Artist to Festival
Award Winner
The arts were celebrated and awards were presented at the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival, Central Ohio’s premier one-day blind-juried arts festival showcasing nearly 200 fine art and fine craft artists from all over the country in a free alfresco interactive art space held on Monday September 5, 2011.Hosted by the City of Upper Arlington’s Cultural Arts Division, the festival was held in Northam Park, 2070 Northam Road, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Approximately 25,000 people attended this year’s event, perused and purchased art from Festival and Emerging Artists, engaged in the arts creating make ‘n take art in the Art Activities Area and enjoyed performances at the Art Activities and Main Stages. The “Come for the CART! Stay for the ART!” proved successful with crowds of patrons enjoying over 30 different Food Carts and Trucks, enjoying everything from Tacos to Crepes. The rain held off and the cool weather was a much enjoyed break from the heat, helping set the cheerful and enjoyable tone for the entire event.
Each year at the Arts Festival, two judges review the artwork of the festival to honor participating artists with awards. Best of Show takes home $600, first place receives $300, second place wins $250, and third place gets $200. Along with the monetary award, the four winners are automatically invited back for the 2012 Labor Day Arts Festival without being juried. Each year award-winning festival artists will receive original artwork created by Don Dodrill, the artist who started the festival in 1966.
Congratulations to the following 2011 Festival Artist Award Winners:
Best of Show went to Kristin Gereau - Fiber, Booth # 99:

 |

Second Place went to Kate Morgan- Mixed-Media 2D, Booth# 57:
 |
"Drawing/printing on translucent materials, then layering with inks, fabric & paints. Based on and expanding layering processes with traditional & alternative materials." |

 |
“As a third generation jeweler, I take pride in transforming antique finds into fabulous adornments. Many unique trinkets have been gathered over the years and are the key to making each piece one of a kind. Watch movement components are an element in a number of the final designs.” |
This marks the first year the Festival had an Emerging Artist from the previous year take home an Artist Award the next year. Second Place winner Kate Morgan was part of the 2010 Festival’s Emerging Artist Program, established to provide an opportunity for artists beginning their career as festival artists. The program invites emerging artists interested in pursuing a career as a festival artist to apply, jury and exhibit their art for the first time as a festival artist exhibitor. Through this supportive environment, the participating emerging artist can try exhibiting their artwork in a new venue and learn from established Festival artists, specifically through a mentoring program. Previous Emerging Artists have applied in the established festival application process in recent years and have been accepted and are now participating in shows all over the country.

UA Archives initiative has been selected
as one of only 60 worldwide participants to join The Commons on Flickr. They'll
be among some impressive company, as this group includes the Library of Congress,
the U.S. National Archives, the Smithsonian Institution, and the New York Public
Library -- as well as several overseas national heritage institutions. What
is The Commons? Flickr Commons was launched in 2008 as a partnership between the
Library of Congress and Flickr. The two main purposes of the project are to showcase
the world's publicly-held historical images and to provide a forum for the general
public to participate in the description of those images. What does this
mean to UA? Our community's historical photographs will receive international
exposure as examples of Midwestern suburban daily life in the early 1900s. We
will also be inviting the public to help describe these images. Members of the
Upper Arlington community as well as a broader group of worldwide users will be
able to contribute comments or tags if they wish to share information about the
photographs. Information obtained from these comments may help to enhance information
about people, locations, architectural details, and activities depicted in the
images. Update - It's official!...As of April 9th, Flickr launched the
UA Archives collection in The Commons! Flickr has billed our collection as "a
fine slice of early 20th Century heartland Americana." Check it out at -
http://www.flickr.com/commons/institutions
Now that Flickr has officially launched the UA Archives collection, they are
looking to the UA community to make this a dynamic representation of our city's
early development. You can do this by contributing lots of great comments and
stories to the images on Flickr. |

Haxton began rowing
in the fall of 2005 as a freshman with Upper Arlington Crew. Throughout his career,
Haxton and his teammates have had the pleasure of rowing in many wonderful regattas
held at many beautiful venues. Haxton was weighing his options regarding potential
collegiate rowing based on this spring's performances. After a valiant fight against
the deadly disease, Necrotizing Fasciitis, Haxton is thankful to be alive. Haxton's
right leg was amputated above the knee and his left leg was amputated at the hip.
He will be attending The Ohio State University in the fall, majoring in Economics.
